Doom Eternal is easily among the most hotly anticipated games of 2020. Unfortunately for us mobile gamers, there's no port on the horizon – and so we'll have to make do with what's already out there.
First-person shooters have, in the past, not been the most reliable games to play using touchscreen controls, but that's gradually changed over time, with games like Call of Duty Mobile proving that there are ways to make it work.
Doom is a very specific type of FPS, though, with lightning-fast action, copious amounts of gore, and large, smartly-designed levels to explore.
Those on the hunt for some similar experiences should look no further than these next five games.
Jydge
Pulling from the harsh world of Judge Dredd, Jydge is a top-down shooter that balances moments of quiet tension with shocking outbursts of extreme violence.
Much like the Doom series, this one benefits from a kickass soundtrack and copious amounts of gore. Its guns pack an insane punch, reducing enemies to slimy bits of viscera with a single pull of the trigger.
Its slightly reduced speed might not be to everyone's liking, least of all Doom fanatics, but stick with it and you'll find that it can soar just as high as the classics.
Unkilled
Unkilled is one of the better first-person zombie shooters on the market at the moment. It's got basically everything you'd really want from such a game: great-feeling guns, explosive headshots, and a ton of zombies to take down.
Sure, you could argue that it's overly similar to its creator's earlier Dead Trigger series – and you wouldn't exactly be wrong.
But what it lacks in originality, it makes up for with its solid controls, sheer breadth of content, and mobile-friendly mission structure.
It'll appeal to those who play Doom to turn their brain off and unwind.
Dead Effect 2

Dead Effect 2 is perhaps more Doom 3 than Doom Eternal, but that might not be the worst thing in the world. Its slower pace and more narrative-driven missions will likely still appeal to fans of the series, though you will need to have a high tolerance for iffy writing if you're to persevere and get it finished.
Putting aside the story for a second, the moment-to-moment action is made fun thanks to the punchiness of the game's arsenal and varied selection of both ranged and melee weapons. It's also set in space, which I guess puts it a little closer to Doom than some of these other picks.
Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum
Whether you prefer Wolfenstein or Doom, I think most of us can at least agree that both series have been pretty consistent in their quality over the years, especially considering how long they've been going for.
The most recent Wolfenstein entries reinvented the earlier games' Nazi-blasting fun, though you'd have to go back to the classics if you wanted a game that was tonally similar to Doom. And it just so happens that Wolfenstein 3D might be the most Doom-like non-Doom game on mobile.
The port job isn't particularly amazing, and the controls don't work quite as well as you'd hope, but it's still very playable if mobile is your only gaming platform.
While the game is still available for download from the App Store, it hasn't been updated to be compatible with more recent versions of iOS.
Doom Classic
Yes, this one might be a bit of a cheat, but it'd be silly of me to ignore the fact that you can get solid ports of Doom 1 & 2 right now on mobile for a fairly reasonable price.
Both titles hold up shockingly well given their age, offering fast-paced, inventive action that only a select few of today's games – namely Dusk and Amid Evil – have been able to replicate and even advance.
The levels are generally a joy to explore, the guns still pack a punch, and they're both surprisingly well-suited to being played in short bursts when out and about. Best free synths 2019.
If you're yet to try Doom 1 or 2, the mobile versions are a very decent way to play. Seriously, get on it.
Time Recoil

Time Recoil feels like part puzzle game, part adrenaline-pumping shooter. Despite the fact that most of its gunfights play out in slow motion, they feel utterly frantic in the moment, demanding inventive solutions to seemingly impossible combat scenarios and a real penchant for pain.
Once you get into its unique rhythm, you'll feel like an absolute shotgun-blasting, time-hopping badass. It's really good fun, and the regular moments of manic desperation it inspires feel ripped (and torn?) straight out of Doom's playbook.
